The reviews have not been too kind. But the best one was the one by Hindu. This is not a Hey Ram. It's director's movie through and through and it has to be taken with a grain of salt. People's stupidity on saying that the Afghan character is silly makes me laugh. Do they mean to say that they've never met anyone like that? And honestly I loved the comedy scenes. Its an out and out action entertainer. People watch Indiana Jones and rave about it and yet can't seem to like Dasavatharam which I feel is much much better. Maybe its acceptable for Speilberg to churn out masala but not Kamal Hasan. Or perhaps they had already made up their mind to hate the movie even before it was released. But then I am just another Kamal fan with a blog that no-one reads :-) Please do go to the theatre and watch this movie. Or don't watch it all but do NOT watch it on a pirated CD/DVD.
I am not going to do a review 'coz I don't want to give away spoilers. I loved the movie through and through. It had me laughing in some parts, crying in others and spellbound in most parts. I think Appa can now be a little relieved that his girl has some amount of Iyengar ness in her, 'coz the scenes of Govindarajar moved me to tears that my Lord had faced all this in the past. I am thankful to this movie for a near perfect portrayal of brahmins, especially Iyengars after the mockery that was Anniyan. The diction, pronunciation, costume was authentic.
The few people who still read my blog, do go and watch the movie as soon as you can!

thanks for the review... i've alwez liked kamals acting but i've reduced expectations for this movie . recent movies are abound with his inflated ego. we need another movie by maniratnam and kamal ....
Gonna watch the movie just today but couldn't agree with you more. I just cant believe that even in this age people see with awe when Hollywood delivers a masala entertainer and complain about the same when it comes to Indian cinema....ridiculous!!
periya iyengaru.... ellam orey kuduminga
Dude! You should excuse yourself from review as you are biased (and bound to like it) anyway! Did it match "Sivaji the Boss" release in the US? :-)
I too heard that the humor was good. Iyengars are the scapegoats for all the tamizh movie producers. I don't know how it is in this one.
Howdy, Your blogs are sure read - Just read about a bad review on the same at http://visithra.blogspot.com/2008/06/rehash-kamal.html - Guess some liked and some :) So you are now on twitter too, what next :)
me2 @ 8PM CST :P
Loved the movie...and the masala!!!
@ramesh - From the use of the word "inflated ego" I can see where you are coming from. Yeah a Mani-Kamal combo would be awesome. Let's wait for Marmayogi.
@sandeep - Glad we still have some Kamal fans left
@jugger - Neenga matum ennavam! Ade kudumu dane
@jingu - Dude, the opening was awesome. I am stuck in this small city in Wisconsin and I never knew that there were so many Indians there! But seriously I liked this movie, not just for Kamal
@ram - Great to see another Kamal fans. Yeah there are a lot of bad reviews and most of them are from Rajini fans. So let's excuse those ignorant people :-)
@kaushik - Cool, that awesome :-) Were you watching it in Madison too?
@janani: Ya!! Were you? I loved the part where the movie started playing backwards and we had to wait for an hour. We made awesome noise when it started again :p
@kaushik - Yeah I was somewhere in the middle. I had come alone, so I was pretty inconspicuous! :-) I was getting antsy when they made us wait for half hour though! Glad they atleast screened the whole movie :-)
"Near perfect portrayal of brahmins"
near perfect my ass x-(
that bitch is not concerned abt Avatar singh dying when he gets hit by a bullet, gap kidachadhum she grabs the "perumaley" and runs!
May be thats how brahmins are.....all karyavadhis x-(
You know what, the Govindarajan is the proper portrayal of the modern day brahmin..... rationalist, scientist, questioner of established faith and one who tries knocking some sense into senseless idiots like Andal/Kodhai?
@janani: it could have gotten pretty boring if you were alone...we came as a gumbal...so it was good timepass...
BTW, what do you do in Madison?
@jugger - When I meant "near perfect portrayal", I meant portrayal of how we dress, how we talk etc, not character portrayal. Asin was terrible! She even causes the accident and feels no remorse for it. But then I have always hated Asin, so :-)
Iduku dan ni potti kada vekka dan layaku :-P
@kaushik - It was ok, I could never get bored in a Kamal Hassan movie :-) I am here for a summer internship
@janni
this is yet another trait of kudumis....to speak of "appearances" when they use the word "portrayal".
Veli vesham mattumey parunga,..... kudumis.
hi janani! I watched dasavatharam. It's nice but edit would have been better and in the middle storyline simply fell apart. The kamalakasan and asin fighting on big buildings GRRRRRRR. The first vishnu alya scene is really good. I think, dasavatharam is a story for director shankar. Kamalakasan made a big mistake by choosing K.S.Ravikumar for a film like this.
I totally agree on the indiana jones thingy and would like to add that it was a stupid series of movies(esp. the one with amrish puri as a kali 'devotee') .. ppl in my office are raving about dasavatharam.. would have watched it if it was in gult :)
PS ::: anniyan was a junkax movie too
Hi!
Reading Your blog for the first time... though not a kamal fan, I loved the movie too.. probably because being an Iyengar, the first scene moved me to tears too!
It is surprising how people take it! Many I-Hate-Kamal-because-I-Like-Rajani or I-hate-the-movie-because-i-like-offbeat-movies or I-can/want-to-appreciate-only-hollywood or I'm-too-dumb-to-understand-chaos-thoery people not liking it is fine, but you wouldn't believe, my parents didn't like the movie, because, get this: He is an atheist and he has insulted the lord by the idol shifting hands thing ( He also goes near the toilet.. oh dear lord)! I was shocked, and kept asking if they saw the movie from the beginning!!
